The Taste of Nostalgia: Twinnings Black Currant Tea

We had a tradition in my house growing up. Every night before bed my mum and I would have a cup of tea. For a long time it was orange pekoe, then for awhile it was earl grey, and then we discovered our absolute favourite, Twinnings Black Currant. A black tea with a subtle fruit flavour that I couldn’t get enough of.

Every night mum would put the kettle on, warm the pot, and a few minutes later we’d be sipping tea in front of the TV, or sometimes in the living room, each of us with a book in hand. We both loved it – both the taste, and the warm feeling of cozines that ritual brought. So imagine our disappointment when when Twinnings discontinued the flavour! We searched high and low but could never find it. We tried a few different brands who had similar flavours, but it just wasn’t the same. Eventually we moved on, but we always missed that particular flavour.

A few months ago I moved to a new city and was walking through an unfamiliar grocery store. I was in the tea aisle when lo and behold, what did I see but a tea from the past! It was our long lost flavour, 25 years later (give or take). I grabbed every box they had and then immediately texted my mum.

I know it may sound silly, but it’s remarkable what tastes and smells can do to recover old memories and feelings. I sipped that tea later that night and immediately felt that warm cozy feeling I had grown up with.

Since they’d only had a few boxes at the store I decided to check Amazon on the off chance someone had some. Sure enough it was there. I ordered six boxes and had them sent to my mum. And I’m sure I’ll be ordering more soon.

What about you? Are you a tea drinker? If you’re a fan of black teas I highly recommend giving my mum’s and my favourite a try 🙂

  1. Twinings now sells “Blackcurrant Breeze” but I is terrible compared to the “Blackcurrant” tea that I drank for 40 years.

  2. yeah – we have been looking for the old Blackcurrant tea for a long time and found nothing that comes close.
