Design trends come and go. That’s no secret. And let’s face it, sometimes trends can be fun. But generally speaking, when choosing the fixed, or more permanent items in your home, you want to go with something that will stand the test of time. Which brings us to the question, are wood cabinets outdated?
Some people will say that wood always looks good, and some people even consider it a crime to replace or paint over wood. (Back in my HGTV days I heard this argument time and time again – often with voices raised!) But if you’re considering making a change to your cabinets, I suggest blocking out all the noise and truly considering your own individual circumstances.
Whether wood cabinets are considered outdated depends on a lot of factors, such as the style of the cabinets, the color of the wood finish, and the overall design aesthetic of the space.
Wood cabinets can offer timeless elegance and warmth to a kitchen or any other room. However, certain wood finishes or styles may become less popular over time as design trends evolve and popular opinion changes. For example, dark-stained oak cabinets were popular in past decades but may be considered outdated in some (most) design circles today. The same goes for cherry.
That said, many modern design styles incorporate wood cabinets in fresh and contemporary ways. Lighter wood finishes, natural textures, and minimalist designs are increasingly popular and can give a space a modern and inviting feel. Think Scandinavian design for example. If that’s your thing, a sleek wood finish can update your kitchen in a modern way. Or a warm rustic wood in a modern farmhouse – a beautiful look that in my opinion, is timeless.
Ultimately, whether wood cabinets are considered outdated is subjective and can vary depending on personal preferences and the specific context of the design. If you’re considering installing or updating wood cabinets, it’s essential to consider how they fit within the overall design scheme and whether they complement other elements in the space. Think about how they work with everything else in your home and how they make you feel. Go with your instincts and choose the finish you love.
