Blue kitchen cabinets are definitely having a moment. I first became aware of them about eight or nine years ago, and at the time they seemed very “out there”. I remember back then everyone saying, “ooh, they’re so trendy, they’ll go out of style so quickly.” But it’s almost a decade later and they’re more popular than ever.
Here’s the thing – there’s a BIG difference between trendy and popular. Trendy means it’s having its moment but will probably be gone soon, never to be seen again. Popular on the other hand means just that. Lots of people like it, and whether or not it will stay that way remains to be seen. Personally, I think blue kitchen cabinets are the latter.
Navy blue is a neutral colour, and therefore, it’s a pretty safe bet. It works with just about every other colour, and it’s fairly easy on the eyes. As you shift into more royal blues and aqua blues, you move into some unchartered territory. Those, in my opinion, are a little riskier.
Dark blue kitchen cabinets on the other hand, are very low-risk. While the thought of colour in the kitchen can make some people nervous, the inherent neutrality of dark blue makes them way less scary than, say, red or yellow – two other cabinet colours that have been popping up in home decor magazines lately.
Personally, I prefer it when dark blue cabinets are paired with brushed gold hardware because it looks warm and elegant, but it can certainly be paired with chrome and black as well. Just depends what look you’re going for.
I honestly believe that blue kitchen cabinets are here to stay. While they may fade in popularity somewhat, I can’t imagine that they will ever go out of style completely.
If you’re a little unsure about doing the whole kitchen in blue, I completely understand. Depending on the size and layout, a dark kitchen could feel a little oppressive. In this case I recommend blue lowers and white uppers. It’ve seen it done many times and it always looks great. In fact, that’s what I did in my own kitchen.
