Small Backyard Pool Ideas

I’ve always wanted a pool. For as long as I can remember I’ve felt that pools were a measure of success. It’s a bit silly, but I still feel like the day I get a pool will be the day I feel truly successful in life.

A couple of years ago we bought a house. My very first! We had hoped to find one with a pool, but nothing came up that was in our price range. Finally, we ended up going with a bungalow with a small yard that backs onto a ravine. It seemed like a pretty good compromise. We love the ravine and have no regrets, but…we still want a pool.

When COVID hit and we had to cancel not one, but two Disney World trips, we decided to explore the idea of putting in a pool. With vacations on the backburner, we figured we would try to make the backyard our at-home vacation destination. But here’s the thing, aside from the astronomical price, our backyard is pretty small and a pool would be tough to accommodate. So I got to work and did a deep-dive on Pinterest, looking for some small backyard pool ideas.

This one caught my eye because of how close it is to the house. I had never really considered that you could do this, but I love the effect.

This one is great because of the simplicity. It’s a great reminder that it doesn’t need to be fancy to be beautiful. It’s not very big, but you could easily do laps.

How pretty is this? We’re likely not in the market for any extras like waterfalls, but it sure does make this small rectangular pool feel like something you’d see in a luxury hotel.

Again, small and simple doesn’t mean boring. I love how the wood deck looks around it, too. I feel like it would probably need too much upkeep, but I really do love it. It’s one of my favourite small backyard pool ideas.

I’m loving the shallow entry and the ledge running all the way around this one. Great for sitting and lounging when you don’t want to go all the way in.

I can’t believe it, but this one is probably too small. It’s a great reminder that a tiny pool can still be a mighty pool though! I love how natural it looks with the plants and stone surround.

This is another great example of how you don’t need a large pool surround in order to create a luxurious space. This one has a distinglty tropical feel, but I be they spend a lot of time skimming leaves out of the pool!

We had a pool company come and give us a quote, and they assured us that our small yard can accomodate a decent L-shaped pool. I was thrilled…until they told us the price. It’s significant. There’s a chance we could do it, but we’re just not sure we want to make that kind of financial commitment right now. So we’re going to wait a few more months and see what happens.

Is there any one out there who might have some advice? I’ve heard that people with pools end up not using them, but I’m convinced it’s a myth. Anyone care to weigh in?
