Time and time again we stumble across grand, beautiful rooms that have one thing in common – enviable walls covered in hand painted Chinoiserie wallpaper. These papers exude a sense of rich history and exquisite luxury, and they have the price tag to go with it. Hand painted murals from companies like Gracie and de Gournay can cost thousands of dollars – but not without reason. Architectural Digest has a great piece that delves into what it takes to create these masterpieces, and makes a case for the high price.
If you’re coveting Chinoiserie wallpaper but the price tag is out of your reach, all is not lost. There are some alternatives at a variety of lower price points.
Tempaper
Tempaper offers anyone the opportunity to have a beautiful Chinoiserie mural, reminiscent of the hand painted originals. Aside from the fact that this paper is so true to classic Chinoiserie style, it also has the added benefit of being removable. Perfect for renters and those who like to change things up on the regular.
Here are just three examples of their stunning murals. Visit their website for more.
Mural Sources
Created by Paul Montgomery, Mural Sources offers an alternative to traditional hand-painted Chinoiserie wallpaper. These reproductions of originals are printed to order, however they’re not customizable, meaning you can get them at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. Without the painstaking labor, the price can be kept down (although they’re still an investment). Here are just a few samples of what they have to offer.
Both of these companies have far more than what we’ve shown here. Check them out and let us know what you think. And for examples of Chinoiserie and Chinoiserie inspired walls in action, check out our Pinterest board.
