It’s the foundation of the dining room and it takes centre stage during entertaining season. Make sure your dining table is ready for its close up.
Mix It Up
The days of your granny’s matched dining set are over. If you want a room that looks fresh and current mix styles, eras, and finishes and don’t be afraid to try something bold. When the right mix is achieved a great table can be your dinner party’s main attraction.
Dining Table Materials
Dining room tables come in many different materials. Every type of wood, glass, marble, slate – the list goes on. There are also different variations within each material. For instance, once you’ve decided on wood table you need to decide what type, color, finish, and more. The best thing to do is to figure out what style you like and then to decide whether or not it suits your lifestyle. If you have young kids, a classic French polished mahogany table may not be the best choice. Instead choose something that won’t show watermarks such as a polished marble or glass. If you really want wood go for a more rustic piece that gets better with age as it develops a patina.
Take Care
Before you buy ask yourself how much time and effort you want to put into maintaining your table. Marble and glass can easily be wiped down; hardy woods like maple, teak and oak need occasional maintenance; delicate antiques and wood veneers aren’t nearly as durable so follow your dealer’s care instructions and use furniture pads at meal times to avoid damage.
Love It or Leaf It
If space is an issue consider a table with leaves. Leaves are hinged or detachable flat sections that can be dropped down or removed completely, making the table smaller. Drop leaf tables usually convert to consoles while tables with removable leafs still function as dining tables.
