Must-Have Fall Home Accessories

Nesting season has arrived! I used to think it was just me who loves fall, but popular culture (and the rise of pumpkin spice) has taught me differently. As the temperatures outside start to cool tons of us retreat to our homes to warm up and get cozy, and a big part of that involves putting away the summer stuff and hauling out the fall home accessories. Here are a few that I suggest adding to your house this season to make the most of it.

Cozy Throw

Every house (every room even) needs a cozy throw to snuggle up in during the fall and winter months. Not only are they good for snuggling, they give rooms a touch of warmth and softness. Drape one on the arm of a sofa, on the back of a chair, or folded up on an ottoman. Think warm fabrics like wool, chenille or cashmere.

Candles

Candles are super accessories to have in your home, particularly in autumn. As the days get shorter it’s nice to add the warmth and ambiance of candlelight to lighten things up. You can make great displays out of candles or just display them on their own. And don’t forget about those awesome fall fragrances, like, you guessed it, pumpkin spice (this one also has hints of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove – yum!).

Pinecones

Whether you display them in a big glass bowl or apothecary jar, scattered on the mantle, or as part of a bigger arrangement, pinecones look right just about anywhere during the fall. For a twist on the au naturel look, try spray-painting them. Their sculptural shape means they look gorgeous and fall-like no matter what colour they are.

Reclaimed Wood

Reclaimed wood accessories like trays, charcuterie boards and candle holders look great all year long, but there’s something particularly nice about them in the Fall. Personally, I’m a fan of these wood and epoxy trays and boards from Urban Reclaimed.

Galvanized Buckets

Galvanized metal buckets are great containers for displaying fall arrangements. Fill them with branches and berries, pinecones, or a simple pillar candle. They look terrific when decorating your front porch and steps, or lining a walkway.

Something Orange

Nothing says fall like orange – preferably dark, rusty orange. It could be a throw pillow, a vase, or a collection of oranges dotted with cloves – as long as there’s something orange in your home you know it’s fall! If you’re concerned that orange doesn’t suit your décor remember that it comes in many different shades – bright, dark, rust, and even with coral tones.

Pumpkins and Gourds

Like with pinecones, pumpkins and gourds can be left as is or spray-painted. It’s really the shapes of these little guys that make them fun. One of the hot trends of the moment is to spray pumpkins white and other chalky colours. They take on a slightly more modern and elegant look than their orange counterparts and can still be displayed in all the usual ways. The same goes for gourds which look cute and charming when displayed on a mantle.

Natural Accessories

It’s a good idea to have something natural in every room anyway, but it’s particularly great in the fall. Woven baskets, a piece of rattan furniture, a jute or seagrass rug – items that remind us of the fall harvest are great. Even a collection of woven spheres or a bowl full of walnuts or acorns can achieve the look.

What about you? Are you as crazy for fall home accessories as I am?
