5 Reasons to Visit Banff in the Summer

Trees and lake in Banff, Canada

There are a hundred or more reasons why visiting Banff, Alberta at any time of year is a marvelous idea. Most notably because it’s one of the most naturally beautiful places in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage site boasts the majestic rocky mountains, glacier-fed lakes, and wildlife sightings like you’ll see nowhere else.

In winter Banff is a skiier and snowboarder’s paradise, but in summer – well, in summer it’s a paradise of another kind. So if you’re coveting an insta-worthy summer getaway, put Banff at the top of your list.

Hiking

Exposure to nature has proven time and time again to reduce stress and make us feel more relaxed, and no experience compares to actually hitting the ground and exploring the wilderness on foot. While there are benefits to hiking at any time of year, the extended daylight hours allow more time for exploration, and the warm weather allows you to dip your toes into the crisp turquoise waters. For detailed information about day hikes in and around Banff, visit Parks Canada.

Water Sports

Getting out on the water is one of the great pleasures of visiting Banff during the warmer weather. Whether it’s canoeing, fishing, stand up paddle boarding or white water rafting, you’ll find tour groups and rental companies ready to take you out on a water-filled adventure.  Or bring your own equipment and head out at your leisure. The bonus? Getting out into the middle of a lake will give you views like nowhere else. Get a waterproof case for your camera just in case!

Road Cycling

Wind your way through some of the most stunning scenery in the world. Whether you’re a beginner or a lifelong cyclist, you’ll find hundreds of kilometres worth of trails to challenge and delight you. But make sure you know the rules of the road, and be prepared to share with cars. Click here for trail suggestions.

Mountain Biking

For thrill seekers, big hills and root-filled trails await! Banff offers some of the best mountain bike trails in Canada and you’ll be rewarded for your hard work with spectacular views.  But keep in mind that on the trails you must exercise caution.  Stay on designated trails and be ready to share with hikers and other riders. And be bear aware! Because bikes tend to be fast and silent you’re more likely to surprise a bear when you’re on a bike rather than hiking. Visit the Banff & Lake Louise tourism site for suggested trails.

Horseback Riding

Few things make us feel as powerful and vigorous as sitting on horseback, galloping (or more likely trotting) through the wilderness. So embrace your inner cowboy and saddle up! Choose a day trip or an overnight backcountry tour and experience Banff the way it was meant to be seen.
